In Wisconsin, during 2003, a total of 3,853 cases of suspected abuse and neglect were reported to Adult Protective Services, an increase of 3.6 percent over 2002. Sixteen of the reported incidents in 2003 were fatalities and 357 were considered life-threatening.

Self-neglect was the most frequently reported abuse allegation (49%), followed by material abuse (20%) and neglect by others (13%). Of the 16 fatalities reported in 2003, 11 involved self-neglect.
